In a world of homogeneity, sameness, artificially created images, chinese drop shipping, -- and, dare I say, enshittification of consumer goods --  a lot of people are searching for something real.

Chattanooga Yarn Company is REAL.  A cursory scroll through our social media will show you typos, bad photography, terrible graphic design, and a lot of real, genuine yarn and real, genuine, handmade products.  It's messy, it's fun, and it's real.

Buying from a real, live, genuine local yarn shop comes with some stuff that you don't get from Amazon, Wal Mart, Temu, or whatever drop ship hellscape is clogging your feed with AI-generated images of stuff that never existed and never will.  It comes with real humans, it comes with mistakes, and it comes with the reality of fighting to survive as a small business in a landscape clogged with stuff that seems too good to be true because it's totally fake garbage.

We have a lot of customers who buy online.  It's the coolest thing to come into the shop in the morning and pack up orders that go all over the country.  Yes, we come in early, pull stuff off the shelves, stuff it in whatever shipping container fits, and stick the label on it ourselves.  There's no warehouse, there's no shipping department, there's no drop shipping.  You are literally buying yarn off the walls of an actual yarn shop when you shop at ChattanoogaYarn.com.  Crazy, right?

But buying from a real shop comes with real shop realities.  The mail doesn't run on Sunday. Sometimes, an item you ordered got shoplifted by some butthole before you placed your order and I have to cancel it.  Your package looks kind of like an all-thumbs kindergartener packed it? Yep, you should see how bad my Christmas gifts look!

All sales are final here, and sometimes people get mad about that.  I've worked in this industry for 20 years now, and I didn't come to this policy lightly.  I've never seen so many insect infestations from online yarn companies as I have heard about in the past 2 years -- including the biggest online yarn company in the business.  I've seen people try to return yarns that smell terrible -- like cigarette smoke or animals.  I've had people try to return yarn that was obviously used, that wasn't purchased from me, and that was so old the label had yellowed. I have lots of customers who have serious allergies to animal dander or serious smell or chemical sensitivities.

I don't want to pass any of those things along to my customers.  I know that this policy loses some customers who want to live that Amazon lifestyle and buy things just to see if they like them then return them for free and move on.  I don't think that's a good way to treat my customers. It's also not a way that a local yarn shop can survive.  I want every single thing you buy to come to you with your absolute confidence that it is new, clean, unused, uninfested, and that you are the first person to own that yarn. I also want this yarn shop to survive and thrive so that my friends from all over the United States can continue to find awesome yarn here with confidence that it's NEW.

Real is hard in the modern world.  Doing things the way I do them costs more time and money sometimes.  Taking real photos, writing product descriptions myself, doing my social media myself, and handling customer service person to person, without an AI agent screening out customers before they ever get to talk to a human is harder and it takes more time, but it's real.

And if you can't count on your local yarn shop to be real and give it to you straight, who can you count on? Chat GPT and Claude might lie to you and show you a pretty picture of something fake, but here? We're gonna give it to you straight!
